Overview

This Agafay desert day trip is the easiest way to feel the desert if you have little time. Agafay is only about 45 minutes from Marrakech. You ride a camel across bare hills, watch the sun go down behind the Atlas mountains and enjoy dinner in a camp before returning to your riad.

Please note: Agafay is a rocky desert of stone and hills, not sand dunes. For the real Sahara dunes, choose our 3 days from Marrakech to Merzouga or the shorter 2-day Zagora trip.

Schedule of the day

  1. 14:00 – Pick-up at your riad or hotel

    Your private driver picks you up in Marrakech. You drive south-west for about 45 minutes, leaving the city behind and entering a landscape of bare, golden hills.

  2. 15:00 – Arrival in Agafay and tea

    You arrive at a camp in the Agafay desert and receive mint tea. On a clear day, you see the High Atlas mountains on the horizon, often with snow from December to April.

  3. 16:00 – Camel ride

    You ride a camel for about one hour across the stony hills with a camel man. It is calm and suitable for beginners and children.

  4. 17:00 – Optional quad bike

    If you want more action, you can drive a quad bike with a guide on desert tracks (optional, not included). Others can relax at the camp pool or terrace.

  5. 18:00 – Sunset over the desert

    Find a good place to watch the sunset, when the hills turn orange and pink. This is a beautiful moment for photos. (Sunset time changes with the season.)

  6. 19:00 – Dinner in a camp

    Enjoy a dinner of Moroccan dishes such as salads, tajine and fruit in the camp, sometimes with local music and a fire.

  7. 21:30 – Return to Marrakech

    Your driver takes you back to your riad or hotel in Marrakech. You arrive at about 22:15.

Are there sand dunes in Agafay?

No. Agafay is a stone desert with hills. It is beautiful, but if you want golden dunes, you need to go to Merzouga or Zagora.

Can I sleep in Agafay?

Yes. Many camps offer a night. We can pick you up the next morning.

Is it cold in the evening?

From November to March evenings are cold. Bring a warm jacket.
