Agafay Desert vs Sahara (Merzouga): Which One Should You Choose?
Published October 30, 2026 · 6 min read
Many travellers want to see the desert, but they have only a few days in Marrakech. Online, they see two names: Agafay and Merzouga. Both are called "desert", yet they are very different places. In this article we compare the Agafay desert vs Sahara dunes of Merzouga in an honest way. We live in Khamlia, next to the Merzouga dunes, but we also organise trips to Agafay every week, so we know both very well.
Agafay desert vs Sahara: the short answer
- Agafay is a rocky, stony desert about 45 minutes from Marrakech. There are no big sand dunes. It is perfect for a sunset, a dinner and one night in a camp.
- Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is part of the real Sahara landscape, with golden sand dunes up to about 150 metres high. It is far from Marrakech and needs 2 to 3 days.
If your dream is the classic picture of camels walking on high orange dunes, you need Merzouga. If you want a calm desert evening without a long drive, Agafay is a very good choice.
What is the Agafay desert?
Agafay is a dry plateau of small hills, stones and earth in light brown and pink colours. On clear days you see the snowy peaks of the High Atlas behind it. Because it is so close to the city, it is easy to visit in an afternoon. Typical activities are a short camel ride, a quad bike ride, a sunset view and dinner in a camp.
Good points of Agafay
- Very short transfer: about 45 minutes from Marrakech.
- Easy for families, older travellers and short holidays.
- Comfortable camps, some of them very luxurious.
- Beautiful sunset with the Atlas Mountains in the background.
Limits of Agafay
There are no real sand dunes. Some visitors are surprised when they arrive, because the photos online can be confusing. The sky is also less dark than in the deep south, because Marrakech is close.
What is the Sahara in Merzouga?
Erg Chebbi is a sea of sand dunes near the village of Merzouga, close to the Algerian border. The colour of the sand changes from yellow to orange to red during the day. At night, the sky is very dark and full of stars. You ride a camel into the dunes, sleep in a camp, and wake up early to watch the sunrise from the top of a dune.
The road from Marrakech is long: about 9 to 10 hours of driving in total. This is why we always cut it into two days, with a night in the Dades Valley. On the way you see the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the old ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorges. You can read more in our Sahara desert guide to Merzouga.
Good points of Merzouga
- Real high sand dunes and the classic Sahara landscape.
- Very dark sky for stars and the Milky Way.
- The road trip itself is one of the most beautiful in Morocco.
- Local culture: Gnawa music in Khamlia, the market in Rissani, nomad families.
Limits of Merzouga
You need at least 3 days from Marrakech, and long driving days. In July and August the heat is strong, and in winter the nights are cold.
What to expect in a desert camp
In both deserts, camps range from simple tents with shared bathrooms to luxury tents with a private shower and toilet. In Agafay, some camps also have a swimming pool and a restaurant with views of the mountains. In Merzouga, the camps stand between the dunes, and the evening is quieter, with a fire, tea and Berber drums. Electricity is often limited to lights and phone charging, so bring a power bank. The night is very calm in both places, but in Merzouga you are truly far from the city lights.
Comparison: time, comfort and experience
- Time needed: Agafay half a day or one night; Merzouga 3 days minimum from Marrakech (4 days if you end in Fez).
- Landscape: Agafay has rocks and hills; Merzouga has sand dunes.
- Driving: Agafay is about 45 minutes each way; Merzouga needs two long days of road.
- Stars: good in Agafay, excellent in Merzouga.
- Best for: Agafay suits short stays and relaxed travellers; Merzouga suits travellers who want the real Sahara.
Which desert trip from Marrakech is right for you?
Choose Agafay if you have only 2 to 4 days in Marrakech, if you travel with small children or older parents, or if you want a luxury dinner under the sky without a long drive. Our Agafay desert day trip from Marrakech leaves in the afternoon and returns in the evening. For a full night with more comfort, the luxury Marrakech, Agafay and Atlas tour includes a night in a luxury camp, with dinner in the camp.
Choose Merzouga if you have 3 days or more, and if the dunes are the main reason for your trip. The 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga desert is the shortest real Sahara trip, with dinner in the Dades Valley and in the desert camp. If you continue to Fez, take the 4-day route from Marrakech to Fez via the desert, which gives you a second night in the dunes.
Can you do both?
Yes. Many of our guests spend one evening in Agafay at the start of the trip, then go to Merzouga a few days later. The two experiences are different enough to enjoy both. Because all our tours are private, we can build a tailor-made trip that includes both deserts.
