Quad or Buggy in the Morocco Desert: Which Ride Is Right for You?

Quad or buggy in the Morocco desert: a two-seat dune buggy driving on a sandy track in the Agafay desert

Many travellers ask us the same question before their trip: should I ride a quad or buggy in the Morocco desert? Both are fun, both are guided, and both give you a different view of the desert than a camel or a 4x4. But they feel very different. Our team lives in Merzouga, next to the Erg Chebbi dunes, and we organise both rides every week. This guide explains the differences in simple words, so you can choose the right ride for you, your partner or your family.

In short: a quad is for one person who wants to feel the wind and control the machine. A buggy is for two people sitting side by side, with more comfort and more protection. The place also matters: Agafay near Marrakech and the Sahara dunes of Merzouga are two very different deserts.

Quad or buggy in the Morocco desert: the main differences

  • Seats: a quad (also called ATV) has one rider; some models take a passenger behind. A buggy has two seats side by side, like a small car.
  • Driving: on a quad you steer with handlebars and use your body to balance in turns. A buggy has a steering wheel, pedals and a seat belt.
  • Comfort: the buggy has a roll cage and better suspension, so it feels softer on stones and dunes. On a quad you feel every bump.
  • Dust and sun: on both you get dust and sun. Wear a scarf, sunglasses or goggles, and long sleeves.
  • Licence: for a buggy the driver usually needs a valid car licence. For a quad, rules depend on the activity and the operator; we confirm them when you book.
  • Groups: a family of four often takes two buggies (one adult driver in each). A group of friends often prefers one quad per person.

Riding a quad: freedom and fun

A quad is easy to learn. It has an automatic or semi-automatic gearbox on most rental models, and the guide gives a short briefing before you start: how to accelerate, how to brake, how to keep distance from the rider in front. After ten minutes on easy ground, most people feel relaxed. Then the guide leads you on longer tracks.

The quad is the right choice if you like a light, active ride and you are happy alone on your machine. It is also a little lighter in sand, so it is fun on small dunes. Read more about our quad rides near Marrakech in the Agafay desert and our quad rides in the Merzouga dunes.

Driving a buggy: comfort and sharing

A dune buggy (also called side-by-side) feels like a small off-road car. You sit low, you wear a seat belt and a helmet, and the roll cage protects you. The driver and the passenger share the experience and can talk during the ride. Many couples and parents with a teenager prefer the buggy for this reason.

Buggies are more powerful than most quads. On big dunes they climb well, and the guide shows you how to keep a steady speed in soft sand. Children usually ride as passengers only; the minimum age depends on the activity and is confirmed when booking. See our dune buggy rides in Agafay and Merzouga for the formats.

Agafay or Merzouga: where to ride?

Agafay, near Marrakech

The Agafay desert is about 45 minutes from Marrakech. It is a stone desert with soft hills, dry river beds and views of the High Atlas mountains. There are no big sand dunes, but the tracks are long and varied. It is perfect if you stay only in Marrakech. You can add a ride to an Agafay desert day trip from Marrakech or to a luxury Marrakech tour with an Agafay camp. Our guide Agafay or Sahara explains the two deserts in detail.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, in the Sahara

In Merzouga you ride in real Sahara sand dunes, some of them very high. You can go around the big dunes, to the village of Khamlia or to the black stone desert. The best time is late afternoon, before the sunset, or the morning after your camel ride. To reach Merzouga you need at least 3 days from Marrakech, for example on our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour or the 4-day tour from Marrakech to Fez via the desert. More ideas are in our Merzouga desert guide.

How long should you ride?

  • 1 hour: enough for a first try and some photos. Good for beginners and children as passengers.
  • 2 hours: the most popular choice. You go further, reach better viewpoints and stop for tea.
  • Half day: for people who already feel confident. In Merzouga you can reach Khamlia or the black desert; in Agafay you cross more hills and valleys.

In summer, ride early in the morning or late in the afternoon. In winter, the middle of the day is pleasant, but the wind can be cold, so bring a warm layer.

Safety: what to expect

  • A helmet is always provided; goggles or a scarf for the dust are usually provided too.
  • The guide gives a safety briefing and rides in front of the group the whole time.
  • Speed is adapted to the slowest rider. Overtaking the guide is not allowed.
  • Minimum ages and licence rules depend on the activity and are confirmed when booking.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers motor activities.
  • Drink water before and after the ride, and use sun cream.

If someone in your group is pregnant, has back problems or does not feel comfortable, a camel ride or a 4x4 tour with our driver is a calmer way to see the desert.

Our advice

Choose the quad if you travel alone or with friends and want an active, simple ride. Choose the buggy if you travel as a couple or a family, want more comfort, or prefer a steering wheel. Choose Agafay if your time is short and you stay in Marrakech, and Merzouga if you want the real Sahara dunes. Both rides have a tailor-made price, and we can add them to any tour. Frequently asked questions

Is a quad or a buggy better for beginners?

Both are fine for beginners with a guide. The buggy feels more stable and familiar if you drive a car. The quad is easy too, but you need a little more balance in turns.

Can children ride a quad or a buggy?

Children can usually ride as passengers in a buggy. Minimum ages depend on the activity and the machine and are confirmed when booking. Some places also have small quads for older children on easy ground.

Do I need a driving licence?

For a buggy, the driver usually needs a valid car licence. For a quad, the rules depend on the activity. Bring your licence and we confirm the details when you book.

How much does a quad or buggy ride cost?

The price is tailor-made. It depends on the place, the length of the ride and the number of machines. Send us a message on WhatsApp or design your trip, and we send you a quote.
